Feedreader

I’ve been using the excellent freeware RSS reader Feedreader for ages; great for keeping up with my RSS feeds (Thunderbird can do much the same, but for some reason I find I prefer Feedreader…)

Having installed it in XP I wanted to portable-ise* it so I could use it in my Windows 7 setup. Turns out – thanks to this post – that it’s rather easy to do…

  1. Copy your Feedreader installation files to your USB key / data drive of choice.
  2. Now create a blank feedreader.ini in the newly copied directory.
  3. Now comes the trickier part. Find your personal directory (in my case C:\Documents and Settings\Simon\Application Data) – remember that this is a hidden directory so you need to show hidden files.
In here is a Feedreader directory.  Copy the file RSSENGINE.FDB to the data directory in your new directory.  (Note: the first rule of intelligent tinkering is to save all the pieces, so you might want to take a copy for now, just to be safe).
  4. Now start Feedreader from its new home.
  5. Go to the File menu, and pick Database information.  The long field “database information” should read the new directory where Feedreader lives.
  6. Enjoy your portable Feedreader!
