Feedreader
I’ve been using the excellent freeware RSS reader Feedreader for ages; great for keeping up with my RSS feeds (Thunderbird can do much the same, but for some reason I find I prefer Feedreader…)
Having installed it in XP I wanted to portable-ise* it so I could use it in my Windows 7 setup. Turns out – thanks to this post – that it’s rather easy to do…
- Copy your Feedreader installation files to your USB key / data drive of choice.
- Now create a blank feedreader.ini in the newly copied directory.
- Now comes the trickier part. Find your personal directory (in my case C:\Documents and Settings\Simon\Application Data) – remember that this is a hidden directory so you need to show hidden files.
In here is a Feedreader directory. Copy the file RSSENGINE.FDB to the data directory in your new directory. (Note: the first rule of intelligent tinkering is to save all the pieces, so you might want to take a copy for now, just to be safe). - Now start Feedreader from its new home.
- Go to the File menu, and pick Database information. The long field “database information” should read the new directory where Feedreader lives.
- Enjoy your portable Feedreader!
