VideoLAN 0.9.2
VideoLAN‘s VLC 0.9.2 (codenamed Grishenko) has been released today.
It’s the result of about 2 years work by the VideoLAN team, and features a brand new interface, support for more file formats (including flv), better hi-definition (1080p) support and fullscreen controls. (The full feature list is on the wiki.)
Because VLC is completely open source and codec-less (meaning no third-party software needs to be installed in order to support certain video formats), this means that VLC is not only completely redistributable, but immune from codec registry problems that usually plague other video players that are more highly-tied into the operating system. This also means that if you have a file that doesn’t play properly in a different player that uses the o/s codecs, it might play in VLC (or vice versa, of course) – giving you a chance to see that all important presentation after all!
VideoLAN has binaries for Windows, Mac OS X, BeOs and Syllable. Source is provided for compilation on Linux and Solaris. Recommended.
